Human Resources Internships

HR internships are usually a student's first exposure to how organisations actually run, and the work is more varied than the title suggests: recruitment coordination, screening and scheduling, onboarding, engagement programmes, and a fair amount of documentation.

Recruitment is where most interns start, and it teaches something genuinely useful regardless of where you end up: you spend weeks looking at applications from the other side of the table, which permanently changes how you write your own. Students who have done a recruiting internship tend to be noticeably better at applying for jobs afterwards.

The skills that matter here are unglamorous and real: keeping track of many parallel conversations without dropping any, writing clearly, and handling confidential information carefully. If you can point to a college society or event where you coordinated people and things did not fall apart, that is directly relevant experience. Say so in the application.

Expect the work to be administrative more often than strategic, and treat that as the point rather than a disappointment. Interview scheduling across several teams, keeping a tracker honest, and following up with candidates who have gone quiet are the tasks that teach you how a company really makes decisions about people. Ask early whether you can sit in on interviews as a note-taker, since that is usually the fastest way to see the judgement behind a hiring call.
